What you need to know

What You Need to Know About Outdoor Cinema in Cockburn

Coastal wind at Coogee and Port Coogee: The Fremantle Doctor blows hard through Coogee and North Coogee on summer afternoons. It typically eases by 7pm to 8pm, which is fine for an 8:30pm start. For any Coogee or North Coogee venue, we recommend the 3m framed screen over the inflatable. The framed screen handles residual coastal wind significantly better. Canal-facing backyards and inland Cockburn suburbs are sheltered and the inflatable is fine.
Best season for Cockburn outdoor cinema: March through May is outstanding. Cockburn's evenings in autumn are some of the best in Perth: 18 to 24 degrees, dark by 7pm, the Fremantle Doctor long gone, and the coastal suburbs at their absolute best. Summer is busy but plan for a later start (8:30pm minimum in December and January). The City of Cockburn already runs its own summer movie nights in parks, which tells you everything about how well outdoor cinema works here.
Bibra Lake wetlands in summer: Mosquitoes can be active around Bibra Lake Reserve and Beeliar Regional Park from November through April. Worth giving guests a heads-up and having repellent available. For evening events near the wetlands, start at dusk when the breeze picks up and insects settle.
Memorial Hall Hamilton Hill: An exceptional indoor cinema venue. 200+ capacity, heritage character, stage, and a kitchen. It is one of the most atmospheric movie night venues in all of southern Perth. We know the hall well. Book the venue through the City of Cockburn, allow 15 working days notice, then book the cinema equipment with us for the same night.
🎭 The Memorial Hall story

We ran a cinema night at Memorial Hall Hamilton Hill for a production company. The turnout was excellent. So was the enthusiasm. The problem was that a lot of the kids who came along were sick, and in the way that kids reliably do, they shared it generously with everyone else in the hall.

Within days, the entire production cast was down with the same bug. The production company had to postpone their show for a full month while everyone recovered. The cinema night went brilliantly. The aftermath, less so. We still run events at Memorial Hall. We now privately hope that everyone coming along is in good health.

About Cockburn

A Brief History of Cockburn, Western Australia

Cockburn is one of Perth's oldest settled districts and one of its fastest-growing. With 125,000 residents across 22 suburbs, it combines heritage limestone settlements, a thriving coastal lifestyle, and a community character shaped by generations of migrant families, sporting clubs, and local institutions.

Cockburn through the ages

Pre-1829
The Whadjuk Noongar people have lived on and cared for this land for thousands of years. Archaeological camp sites have been found at North Lake and Bibra Lake. Coolbellup is connected to the mythology of the female Waugal. The land is known as Beeliar Boodja.
1827
Cockburn Sound is named by Captain James Stirling after Admiral Sir George Cockburn, the British naval officer who escorted Napoleon to exile on Saint Helena after Waterloo. The City carries his name today.
1829
European settlement begins. Hamilton Hill becomes the site of the first significant vineyard in the Swan River Colony, established by Charles MacFaull, who later became the colony's first Government Printer.
1880s
Spearwood and Coogee develop a major limestone and lime-burning industry. Kilns burn continuously for 48 hours, supplying lime to the WA goldfields. Over 140 heritage-listed sites from this era remain documented today.
1911
A significant wave of Slavic and Italian migrants arrives to work the market gardens of Spearwood, Hamilton Hill, and Coogee. Their surnames are woven through Cockburn's community history to this day.
1925
Memorial Hall Hamilton Hill is officially opened on 21 March, built by community donations to honour the soldiers and nurses who left the district in 1914. Still standing today at 435 Carrington Street, Hamilton Hill.
1955
Following a successful community referendum, the district is renamed Cockburn, asserting its independence from Fremantle. City status follows in 1979.
2017
The Fremantle Dockers AFL club moves its training and administration headquarters to Cockburn ARC in Cockburn Central. A $109 million facility cementing Cockburn as home to one of Perth's most beloved sporting clubs.
Today
125,000 residents across 22 suburbs. Adventure World, Cockburn ARC, Port Coogee Marina, Coogee Beach, and Beeliar Regional Park make Cockburn one of southern Perth's premier lifestyle destinations.
