What you need to know

What You Need to Know About Outdoor Cinema in Subiaco

Inner Perth backyards are bigger than you think: Subiaco's Federation and interwar character homes were built on generous blocks by inner-city standards. Many have rear gardens that comfortably fit the 3m screen for 20 to 30 guests, and some can take the 5m. If you are not sure, send a photo of your backyard and we will tell you straight. We have set up in smaller spaces than you think and made it work well.
The 8m screen question: The most common assumption about outdoor cinema hire in Subiaco is that inner Perth properties are too small for anything beyond the 3m screen. This is usually wrong. The 8m screen needs approximately 12m x 12m of flat space, which rules out most Subiaco backyards but opens up the oval, reserve, and courtyard venues where many Subiaco events take place. See our story below for proof that the 8m screen can surprise you.
Subiaco Oval: Subiaco Oval has hosted AFL football since the early twentieth century. It remains an active community sporting and event venue. For larger Subiaco events of 200 to 1,000 guests, the oval ground and adjacent reserves are the natural choice for the 5m or 8m screen. Contact the City of Perth for event permit enquiries.
Best season for Subiaco outdoor cinema: March through May. Subiaco sits inland enough to avoid the full force of the coastal Fremantle Doctor, meaning autumn evenings are warm and still by 7pm. Full dark arrives by 7pm in April. Inner Perth properties also benefit from ambient city lighting fading after 8pm, which helps screen visibility. Summer works well with a later 8:30pm start.
🎬 The 8m screen that fit

We ran an outdoor cinema hire in Subiaco with an 8m screen. The space was compact. The screen took up roughly half of the available area. A hundred people packed in to watch.

Everyone enjoyed it thoroughly. The proximity to the screen, if anything, made the experience more immersive. It is a reminder that if you want a bigger screen, you can usually make it work. Ask us about your space before ruling it out.

About Subiaco

A Brief History of Subiaco, Western Australia

Subiaco is one of Perth's most distinctive inner suburbs. Character homes, a thriving café and restaurant culture on Rokeby Road, Subiaco Oval, and a strong community identity make it one of Perth's best-known and most well-regarded addresses. Its history is longer and more interesting than most people realise.

Subiaco through the ages

Pre-1829
The Whadjuk Noongar people are the traditional custodians of the land on which Subiaco sits. The area sits within Whadjuk Boodja (Whadjuk country), adjacent to the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River). Noongar people have lived in and cared for this country for tens of thousands of years.
Naming
The suburb takes its name from Subiaco, a town in Lazio, central Italy, near Rome, which is historically significant as the location where Saint Benedict established some of the earliest Christian monasteries in the sixth century. The connection to Western Australia came through the Benedictine monks of New Norcia, who named the suburb in the 1850s. It was briefly known as Jolimont before the Subiaco name became established.
1850s
Benedictine monks from New Norcia establish a presence in the Perth area. The suburb name Subiaco reflects their influence and their connection to the Italian Benedictine tradition. Early settlement begins in what is now the Subiaco area as Perth expands westward from its original townsite.
1896
Subiaco Football Club is founded, establishing one of Perth's longest-running sporting institutions. The Lions become a central part of Subiaco's community identity, playing at the suburb's oval for over a century.
1908
Subiaco Oval opens. The ground becomes one of Perth's major sporting venues and the home of Subiaco FC. Over the following century it hosts AFL football, major concerts, and community events, becoming one of the suburb's defining landmarks.
Early 1900s
Subiaco develops as an inner suburban residential area. The Federation and interwar character homes that define much of the suburb today are built during this period. Rokeby Road emerges as the main commercial strip. The suburb's character as a prosperous inner-Perth community is established.
2000s
Significant urban renewal and development transforms parts of Subiaco, particularly around the oval precinct. High-density housing and commercial development complement the existing character home stock. Subiaco becomes increasingly valued as an inner-city lifestyle suburb close to the CBD.
2015
The City of Subiaco merges with the City of Perth as part of the WA Local Government reform process. Subiaco's civic administration moves to the City of Perth, though the suburb retains its distinctive identity and strong community character.
Today
Subiaco is consistently rated among Perth's most desirable inner suburbs. Rokeby Road cafes, the character home streetscapes, Subiaco Oval, proximity to Perth CBD, and a strong community identity make it one of Perth's most recognisable and liveable addresses.

Rokeby Road and the Subiaco character

Rokeby Road is Subiaco's main commercial strip and one of Perth's best-known café and dining precincts. The combination of Federation-era shop fronts, independent cafes, and a weekend market culture gives Subiaco a character that is distinctly different from newer Perth suburbs. It is also, incidentally, one of the best spots in Perth for an outdoor cinema hire conversation over a coffee before booking.

The Italian connection

Subiaco in Italy sits in the Lazio hills east of Rome, in the Aniene Valley. It is where Saint Benedict of Nursia retreated as a young man and where the Benedictine monastic tradition began. The WA suburb shares the name through the New Norcia Benedictine connection. For a suburb known today for Rokeby Road coffee and AFL football, it carries a surprisingly deep historical thread.
